Former rector of Çanakkale OnsekizMart University Sedat Laçiner has been detained in northwesternTurkey's Çanakkale province in connection with a probe into the"parallel state" group, police sources said Dec. 26.

According to the sources, policelaunched an operation at different addresses in the province earlymorning and detained Laçiner and many other businessmen.

The Arab League has failed to understand Turkey's self-sacrificing and resolved efforts against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the region, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgiç has said.

Turkish Customs and Trade Minister Bülent Tüfenkçi said Dec. 25 that if an agreement with Israel was reached after five years of tense relations, it would allow Turkish products to enter Gaza more easily. 

Answering questions at a news conference with members of the Economy Correspondents' Association, Tüfenkçi said Tel Aviv would allow Turkish products to enter Gaza.

An Istanbul court rejected on Dec. 25 an appeal for the release of prominent journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül, who were arrested on terrorism charges, marking the second time such an appeal was rejected.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Lütfi Elvan has slammed Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) Rector Prof. Ahmet Acar over the recent cyberattacks targeting websites with the extension ".tr," saying the rector "fancied himself an emperor."
