Amidst mounting controversy, the Georgian government's push for a law on "foreign agents" has ignited fierce debate, prompting President Salome Zourabichvili to assert her authority with a promised veto.

Georgia's ruling party said Thursday it would withdraw a bill that opponents warned would stifle dissent and curtail media freedoms, after days of massive protests demanding it be dropped.

In an April 16 phone call, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Georgian counterpart Salome Zourabichvili discussed efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic, according to Turkey's Communications Directorate.

They agreed on cooperation between the two countries is crucial to successfully combat the virus, said a directorate statement.

President Klaus Iohannis had bilateral meetings with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and Georgia's President Salome Zourabichvili, on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York City, the US.

At a meeting in Warsaw, the presidents of Bulgaria and Georgia Rumen Radev and Salome Zourabichvili declared their countries' readiness to encourage trade, mutual investments and tourism in the Black Sea region, BNR reported.
