Military co-operation between Turkey and Montenegro will benefit Podgorica's NATO bid, officials say.

A new five-year military agreement between Montenegro and Turkey will involve joint training of troops and will be important for the Montenegro army and the country's NATO bid, officials and experts said.

NATO secretary-general Andres Fogh Rasmussen announced after ministerial meetings in Brussels on Wednesday that Montenegro would not be invited to join at a summit in September.

“On Montenegro, we will open intensified and focused talks, and we will assess at the latest by the end of 2015 whether to invite Montenegro to join the alliance,” Rasmussen said.

PODGORICA -- Germany will not obstruct Montenegro's accession to NATO and will evaluate reforms conducted in that country when it decides on giving it the green light.
