Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), this year's Filmekimi film week will be held between Oct. 5 and Oct. 14. Filmekimi will also come to Ankara and İzmir during October. 

Türkan Akyol, who was the country's first female minister and university rector, died in the capital Ankara on Sept. 7. She was 89.

Professor Akyol, an academic and politician, had been receiving treatment at Hacettepe University Hospital for a while.

Akyol will be laid to rest in the Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara on Sept. 8.

It was an ironic coincidence that more than a dozen executives and journalists from the daily Cumhuriyet appeared in court on Press Freedom Day. Twelve out of 17 have been in prison since November 2016 and it took nine months for them to defend themselves in court.
