An AirAsia passenger jet with 162 people aboard lost contact over the Java Sea while en route to Singapore on Sunday and is missing, according to airline officials.

Indonesia suspended until first light the search for an AirAsia plane that went missing Dec. 28 in the Java Sea with 162 people on board after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to bad weather.        

Rescuers scoured the sea for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people which went missing in bad weather Sunday en route from Indonesia to Singapore, the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.
      
Air traffic controllers lost contact with the Airbus A320-200 around an hour after it left Juanda international airport at Surabaya in east Java, at 5:20am.
