Russia Protests to Turkey over Downing of Su-24 Warplane

Russia has lodged a formal protest with Turkey over the downing of its Su-24 jet, TASS reported on Tuesday.

"The Russian Defense Ministry urgently summoned the Turkish military attache to present an official protest over the actions of the Turkish Air Force," the Russian news agency said, citing a statement from the ministry.

A Russian Su-24 plane has been shot down on the border of Turkey and Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The Russian Su-24 warplane was downed in Syria’s territory by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet. The objective control data analysis has shown unmistakably that Turkey’s air space was not violated," the ministry said.

The nationality of a warplane downed by Turkish fighter jets early Nov. 24 has not yet been determined, Turkey's General Staff has said, even as the Russian Defense Ministry said one of its fighter jets was downed in Syria, apparently after coming under fire from the ground, Interfax news agency reported.

Turkish jets reportedly downed a warplane violating air space near the Turkish border just over Latakia’s Yamadi village where mostly Turks reside. Turkish authorities say they gave over 10 warnings during a 5-minute period but the fighter plane did not go back, hence it was bombed by two Turkish F-16 fighter jets.

Two Turkish F-16's shot down a Russian-made SU-24 jet on Nov. 24 near the Syrian border after it violated Turkish airspace, presidential sources said.

Turkey shot down the jet after it failed to heed the warnings within the rules of engagement.

Initial reports said the jet belonged to Russia, but presidential sources later clarified that the jet's nationality was unknown.

Lufthansa cabin crew will go on strike again on Thursday and Friday over pay and retirement demands, newswires have reported.

"We hope that this will finally bring serious movement in this labour dispute and that we will not be forced to also strike in December," AFP quoted the chief of cabin crew trade union UFO, Nicoley Baublies, as saying on Monday.
