GERB, DPS To Negotiate On Government Formation

The centre-right GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) will negotiate on Tuesday afternoon on the formation and support for new government.

At a press conference on Monday DPS leader Lyutvi Mestan said his party will offer unconditional support for a minority GERB government, but refused to support a government formed in coalition with far nationalist parties.

DPS Offers 'Unconditional Support' to GERB Minority Cabinet

Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) leader Lyutvi Mestan said Monday his party would throw its unconditional support behind a single-party minority cabinet.

The party's Chairman outlined two worst-case scenarios ahead of Bulgaria: "new elections or an unprincipled anti-European coalition" in which nationalist entities could take part.

The two biggest Bulgarian parties failed to shake hands at the consultations held in Parliament on Monday.

After the four-hour-long talks, Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) and the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) took no decision to jointly participate in a coalition government.

Reformists Ready to Support Coalition with GERB 'Under Certain Conditions'

Bulgaria needs a coalition cabinet based on a written agreement and not the minority government that GERB proposes, a Reformist Bloc member said on Friday.

A minority cabinet, what virtually was "the one of [former PM] Plamen Oresharski," will be "unsuccessful" in times of crisis, Former Union of Democratic Forces (SDS) Chairman Martin Dimitrov told the Bulgarian National Television.
