The doors of Bulgaria's iconic Buzludzha monument have been opened for the first time in eight years as preparations get underway to restore the communist-era landmark.

A group of journalists were allowed to enter the saucer-shaped building, which was built in 1981 by Bulgarian communists as a tribute to the creation of the Bulgarian socialist movement.

The central entrance of the Buzludzha saucer was opened for the first time officially after 8 years, reports bgnes. 

By the end of the year a number of specialists from Europe and Bulgaria are expected to give their opinion about the ways of restoration of the socialist monument.

A helicopter with VIP tourists will land on May 13 at the site of the Buzludzha Monument. The foreigners have expressed their wish to explore the Communist era saucer from 15.00 to 18.30, a permission for this was already requested from the regional governor Gergana Mikova, and she, in turn, informed the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Stara Zagora.

The monument of Buzludja is among the seven most endangered cultural and historical sites in Europe, BNR reports.
