Migrants intercepted off Lesvos, up to four feared drowned

Around 15 undocumented immigrants were rescued and at least four more were reported missing and feared drowned after their dinghy capsized off the coast of Plomari, on the island of Lesvos in the eastern Aegean, on Saturday.

Initial reports did not point to the number of people aboard the boat, but suggested that most of them were Syrian nationals, including a 14-year-old girl.

Coast guard find body of drowned monk off Mt Athos

A coast guard vessel on Wednesday recovered the body of a monk who had been missing since Tuesday night off the coast of Dafni, a small settlement on Mount Athos.

The monk went missing after the boat he had been in with two fellow monks capsized on Tuesday.

The other two monks were rescued by passing boats shortly after the vessel capsized.

The MV Miraj-4 capsized during a storm in the Munshiganj district as it travelled towards Shariatpur. Officials say the death toll is expected to rise, the BBC reports.

Coast guard rescues 40 migrants in boat off Lesvos


Forty migrants were rescued off the coast of Lesvos on Monday after being spotted by a coast guard patrol boat.

The immigrants were in a rubber dinghy. One of the forty fell into the water but was pulled to safety.

The rescue comes a few days after 22 migrants drowned off Samos when their boat capsized. Another seven are still missing.
