Eastern Mani in southern Greece and the islands of Karpathos and Syros have been deemed to have the most environmentally friendly beaches, and will be spared of umbrella loungers this year, according to a list drafted by the Finance Ministry of 198 "untouched" beaches in 49 municipalities, published on Friday.

The government is preparing to announce the creation of two new marine parks - in the Ionian and Aegean seas - ahead of the 9th Our Ocean Conference in Greece (April 15-17). 

Shocking images of animal cruelty have emerged from the island of Kefalonia, where an unknown perpetrator killed a fox, strapped it to two pieces of wood shaped like a crucifix and then hung it from a tree near a main road.

The gruesome spectacle was spotted by a local resident, who published photographs of it on social media.

Passenger ferries will resume their schedules from Piraeus harbor after 5:30 p.m. as winds have moderated. The exception will be the flying dolphins plying the Saronic Gulf routes.

The board of directors of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED) on Wednesday announced it had received only one bid in a tender for the concession of port operation services (berthing and other services) and the right to use, operate, manage and develop Argostoli Marina. 

Two commercial ships that collided on Wednesday morning four nautical miles south of Kefalonia have been towed to Argostoli port on the island. 

The collision caused a fire on one of the ships, which was immediately put out by the crew.

The two captains are expected to testify and the ships, which suffered material damage, will undergo an inspection. 

A seasonal firefighter is accused of intentionally starting a fire in a forested area in southern Kefalonia on August 13. 

The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday where he was ordered to remain detained and was given time until Friday to present his defense.
