Brazil on June 9 restored detailed COVID-19 data to its official national website following controversy over the removal of cumulative totals and a ruling by a Supreme Court justice that the full set of information be reinstated.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Latin America have surged past one million, while hard-hit Britain and Russia eased lockdowns on June 1, despite not having their outbreaks fully under control.    

Governments around the world are moving to ease restrictions that have wrecked their economies, even as the number of cases tops 6.1 million and virus deaths exceed 371,000.    

Brazil appears to be entering another dark week, as coronavirus cases grow by the thousands and controversy swells around President Jair Bolsonaro.

Brazilian Justice Minister Sergio Moro resigned on April 24 after President Jair Bolsonaro removed his "trusted man" from the federal police.

At a press conference, Moro said he was stepping down due to "political interference" in the appointment of chiefs, directors and superintendents "from politics and not due to technical merits".

Two tweets by Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in which he questioned quarantine measures aimed at containing the novel coronavirus were removed on March 29, on the grounds that they violated the social network's rules.    

India on Jan. 26 showcased its military strength at an event marking the country's 71st Republic Day.

President Jair Bolsonaro on Aug. 23 authorized the deployment of Brazil's armed forces to help combat fires raging in the Amazon rainforest, as a growing global outcry over the blazes sparks protests and threatens a huge trade deal.

Amid global concern about raging fires in the Amazon, Brazil's government complained on Aug. 22 that it is being targeted in smear campaign by critics who contend President Jair Bolsonaro is not doing enough to curb widespread deforestation.

The fires in the Amazon represent an "international crisis" and should be among the key topics that G7 leaders will address during their meeting, which begins tomorrow.

This was tweeted by French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the forum, which will be held in the French city of Biarritz.
