Corruption in Uzbekistan

Representatives from more than 20 countries gathered in the Uzbek capital Tashkent on Monday for an international conference on the future of Afghanistan.

Uzbekistan's interim leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev has won a crushing victory to become the country's second-ever president following the death of long-reigning strongman Islam Karimov, official results showed Dec. 5.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Nov. 18 that ties between Turkey and Uzbekistan should be developed further after the Central Asian country's presidential election is held on Dec. 4.      

Tajikistan's President Emomali Rakhmon on Jan. 27 named his eldest daughter his chief of staff, in the leader's latest appointment of a relative to a top post.

The president of the impoverished central Asian country appointed his 38-year-old daughter Ozoda Rakhmon to the role after she served as deputy foreign minister since 2014, Rakhmon's office said.

Uzbekistan on March 29 declared its presidential ballot valid after more than the required third of voters turned out in an election that 77-year-old strongman incumbent President Islam Karimov is almost certain to win.
