Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides has expressed his "deep satisfaction" over the Cyprus-initiated joint multinational plan to open up a humanitarian aid corridor for Gaza in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greece and Cyprus on Monday welcomed moves by Turkey to boost relations with the European Union, but said rapprochement should be gradual and not unconditional. European Union foreign ministers said on July 20 they were ready to re-engage with Turkey, but stopped short of offering Ankara a clear resumption of membership talks.

If Turkey does not tone down its aggression in the eastern Mediterranean, it should no longer be considered a candidate for EU membership, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said in an interview to Politico Europe.

After voting in the European elections on Sunday, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said his country wants to send a message on the Europe its citizens want, with closer cooperation on foreign, monetary and border policy.

Incumbent Nicos Anastasiades comfortably won a second five-year term in Sunday's runoff of the Cyprus's presidential election.

The conservative statesman received 56 percent, while left-wing challenger Stavros Malas secured 44 percent of the vote. Anastasiades collected 215,281 votes against Malas's 169,243.

Following his triumphant re-election for a second term as president of the Republic of Cyprus, and free from the election procedure's anxieties, Nicos Anastasiades is now facing the challenge of leaving his mark on the island's history.

 Greek Cypriots headed back to the polls on Sunday in a runoff presidential vote between an incumbent conservative pledging to re-energise talks at ending the island's division, and a leftist opponent who accuses him of squandering chances of a deal, Reuters reported.
