Authorities in northern Greece have declared a state of emergency in the municipalities of Grevena and Deskati due to the disruptions caused by the recent intense snowfall.

The emergency status will last for one month until snow is cleared from roads leading to rural areas and from dozens of mountain villages that have been cut off.

Main opposition New Democracy intends to implement a bold insurance and tax policy for farmers and livestock breeders when it comes to power, party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

Sports events in Greek tourism hotspots are increasing, with the Spetsathlon 2015 taking place on Spetses this weekend (April 24-26) including swimming, cycling and running.

Next month Deskati, near Grevena, will hold a paragliding event, on May 1-3, and Lesvos will host the 1st Molyvos Bike Tour on May 24.
