Solutions still need to be found for customs arrangements in Northern Ireland to clinch a Brexit deal and European Union leaders could yet meet again if they do not reach an agreement at this week's summit, Germany's Angela Merkel said on Oct. 17.

Negotiations between the European Union and the UK on Brexit continued throughout the night, but no breakthrough was achieved. The two sides will seek a compromise today, ahead of the EU summit tomorrow and for the second time, the AP reported.

"The discussions continued until late in the the night and will continue today," said a European representative, who requested anonymity.

British and European Union officials resumed talks to clinch a Brexit deal on Oct. 15 just a few hours after late-night negotiations wound up, but it was far from clear they would reach an agreement before a leaders' summit on Oct. 16.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson today outlined his government's priorities at a parliamentary pompous ceremony attended by the Queen, with Brexit at the top of the agenda.

The UK has so far not seen a compromise on the part of the European Union in the Brexit talks, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today, urging the community to be flexible in order to reach an exit agreement, Reuters reported.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkhar said that big gaps remain between Britain and the European Union as they try to secure a Brexit deal by next week.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will send a letter to the European Union asking for Brexit postponement if no agreement is reached with the EU on the parting on October 19, government documents submitted to a Scottish court show.  

The European Union and Ireland said on Oct. 3 that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit proposals were unlikely to yield a deal, with Dublin bluntly warning that Britain was heading towards a no-deal exit unless it made more concessions.   

Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, said he and the European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier were doing all they could to get a Brexit deal, and if they failed it would be Britain's responsibility.
