President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, a former high court judge who served as president of the Council of State, weighed in today on the issue of surveillance of citizens by the EYP National Intelligence Service, calling for strict enforcement of the relevant constitutional provisions.

The center-right government on Friday approved in Parliament changes to the criteria for appointing the director of the National Intelligence Service (EYP) - a move aimed at ensuring that the official undertaking the role has adequate professional experience but which provoked angry protests by the opposition.

Former intelligence chief becomes deputy justice minister

A former head of Greece?s National Intelligence Service (EYP), Dimitris Papangelopoulos, was on Wednesday sworn in as deputy justice minister, under minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos.

Papangelopoulos, who was general secretary for transparency at the ministry until Wednesday, led EYP under the premiership of conservative Costas Karamanlis.
