Police remanded 47 people for questioning on Wednesday during pre-emptive searches in downtown Athens, amid concerns of violence breaking out at marches commemorating 15 years since the police shooting of teen Alexis Grigoropoulos.

The police are taking stringent measures for the 15th anniversary of the murder of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos on Wednesday. According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the plan includes thousands of officers deployed on the streets, with reinforcement from riot police units from the provinces. 

Greece's Health Ministry on Tuesday dismissed as a "complete lie" an announcement taped to several buildings in Athens' central Exarchia district warning of bed bug infestations.

The announcement appeared on Tuesday morning taped on various buildings along Harilaou Trikoupi and Komninon streets, as well as on Alexandras Avenue.

Athens taxi drivers joined a nationwide cabbies' strike on Tuesday morning and will be off the clock for 48 hours and possibly longer if a contentious tax reform bill delays being voted in Parliament until Thursday.

Gradual road closures will come into effect ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, to be commemorated with a big rally across the city centre on Friday.
