Germany is bringing together the key players in Libya's long-running civil war in a bid to curb foreign military meddling, solidify a cease-fire and help relaunch a political process to determine the North African nation's future.

With its efforts in the field and diplomatic area, Turkey assumed the key role to bring peace to Libya, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Jan. 19.

The presidents of Turkey and the U.S. spoke over the phone on Jan. 15, according to a statement by the Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate.

General Khalifa Haftar is deliberately delaying the ceasefire in Libya in order to undermine the dominance of Turkey and Russia ahead of Berlin peace conference this weekend, Turkey's defense minister has said, expressing his hope for a political breakthrough between the two warring sides through inter-Libyan dialogue.

The world leaders' meeting will take place on Sunday in Berlin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will host a peace conference on Libya, which will take place in Berlin on Sunday, the German government's office reported, quoted by the DPA and BTA as saying.

After it was announced that Haftar had left Moscow without signing an agreement on a ceasefire in Libya between forces loyal to Haftar and an official government backed by the United Nations, the NATO bombing of Libya began, said Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister.

Turkey will not refrain from "teaching a lesson" to Khalifa Haftar, the commander of eastern Libyan forces, if they continue attacks against the country's internationally recognized government, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Jan. 14.

Moscow is hosting a series of negotiations on Jan. 12 to find a solution to the Libya crisis.

The top diplomats and defense chiefs of Russia and Turkey gathered in the Russian capital to assist the talks between Fayez al-Sarraj, the head of Libya's U.N.-recognized government in Tripoli, and Khalifa Haftar, eastern Libya-based military commander.

The closed-door meeting between Erdoğan and Fayez al-Sarraj is underway at the Dolmabahçe Palace.     

Turkey and Italy's foreign ministers held talks on Jan. 7 in the Turkish metropolitan city of Istanbul.

"Happy to welcome Minister of Foreign Affairs @luigidimaio of #Italy," Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said in a Twitter post following his meeting with Luigi di Maio.
