Debate stirred after university botanical garden is allocated to Turkey's top religious body

The allocation of Istanbul University's Botanical Garden to the Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) in 2015 for the use of the Istanbul Mufti's Office has stirred a debate in Turkey, with the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) blasting the move. 

Shadow of progress falls on Istanbul's historic vegetable gardens

Recep Eraslan, 64, has worked a tiny sliver of land on Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet peninsula for more than three decades. He grows spring onions, arugula and cabbage on a 0.5 hectare plot along the city's ancient Byzantine-era walls that are part of one of the oldest urban gardens, or bostans in Turkish, in the world.

Belgrade Botanical Gardens Reopens to Visitors

Jevremovac has been equipped with a new irrigation system to keep its plants watered and two greenhouses have been rebuilt at a cost of 150 million dinars (over €1.2 million), financed from the EU pre-accession funds.

As well as the greenhouses and the park, its Japanese garden has also been rebuilt, along with the central fountain and the lawns.
