The Greek National Opera (nationalopera.gr) presents a fresh interpretation of 19th-century French composer Georges Bizet's world-famous work, with acclaimed Swedish dancer and choreographer Johan Inger creating a brand-new choreography for the popular four-act opera.

Carmen | Athens | June 22

Kicking off the summer program at the Athens Concert Hall (megaron.gr) is a screening of the revival of Franco Zeffirelli's version of Georges Bizet's "Carmen" as presented last year at the Verona Arena in Italy. With costumes by Anna Anni and sets by El Camborio, it stars the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca and is conducted by Marco Armiliato.

France's ballet star on giving up the American dream

He conquered the New York stage, married a Hollywood star and directed a daring new film version of "Carmen." But Benjamin Millepied says he had to give up the American dream to return to France.

Millepied is best-known to tabloid gossip fans as the husband of actress Natalie Portman, whom he met while working as choreographer on the Oscar-winning film "Black Swan."

‘Carmen’ on AKM stage

One of the most staged operas in the world, 'Carmen' will be performed by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (IDOB) on Jan 19 at the Atatürk Cultural Center - Türk Telekom Opera Hall. Composed by the French composer Georges Bizet, the opera is staged by Italian director Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini.

Gades & Saura’s ‘Carmen’ | February 5-8

Hailed as one of the hottest flamenco shows in the world right now, "Carmen" by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura is being brought to computer screens by the Christmas Theater on February 5-8. The flamenco version of the dramatic story is based on the world-famous late 19th century opera of the same title by George Bizet and on the original inspiration, the novella by Prosper Mérimée.

'Carmen' from the Met | Thessaloniki | February 2

The Thessaloniki Concert Hall will screen George Bizet's "Carmen" live in high-definition from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The French romance is directed by Sir Richard Eyre, conducted by Louis Langree and stars Clementine Margaine, Aleksandra Kurzak, Roberto Alagna and Alexander Vinogradov. The performance is in the original French, with Greek surtitles. Doors open at 7.55 p.m.

As part of the Greek Festival, the Greek National Opera returns with George Bizet's "Carmen." In this production, acclaimed British director Stephen Langridge presents a modern adaptation of the classic tale, setting it in the context of Europe's migration and economic crisis. The performance will take place at the Herod Atticus Theater on July 27, 28, 29 and 31 July, at 9 p.m.
