Russian missiles strike Kiev, shattering sense of calm

A barrage of Russian missiles struck Ukraine's capital early Sunday, hitting unspecified "infrastructure" targets, Kiev's mayor said. No one was reported killed, with one person hospitalized with injuries.

But the attack shattered a sense of calm in Kiev, which hadn't seen similar strikes since the April 28 visit of U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The United States is seeking a meeting behind closed doors

The reason for the meeting is the launch of several medium-range ballistic missiles from North Korea. North Korea confirmed on Monday that it had tested the Hwasong-12 medium-range ballistic missile, and this is the first time since 2017 that it has tested a missile that has the capacity to carry a nuclear warhead, Reuters reported.

North Korea tests longest-range missile since 2017

North Korea on Jan. 30 fired what appeared to be the most powerful missile it has tested since U.S. President Joe Biden took office, possibly breaching a self-imposed suspension on the testing of longer-range weapons as it revives its old playbook in brinkmanship to wrest concessions from Washington and neighbors amid a prolonged stalemate in diplomacy.
