Dutch archaeologists on June 21 revealed an around 4,000-year-old religious site, dubbed the "Stonehenge of the Netherlands" in the country's media, which included a burial mound serving as a solar calendar.

It is known as “America’s Stonehenge.”

The sun was long overdue on June 21 but when it finally appeared, faces lit up and arms rose as one to greet the summer solstice at Britain's most famous prehistoric monument.

The sun was scheduled to come up on the longest day of the year at 4:49 am (3:49 GMT) but was shy in a sky as hazy as the minds of many of the midsummer revelers who spent the night at the sacred site.

As the sun rose over the frost on Salisbury Plain, archaeologist Sarah Greaney conjured up a picture of the hundreds of workers who built Stonehenge, a Neolithic wonder in southern England.

Larger than Stonehenge

The first comprehensive scientific analysis of Stonehenge's imposing megaliths has revealed some of the traits that made them an exemplary building material for the famed monument in southern England including their stout resistance to weathering.

As enchanting as they are mysterious, U.K.'s landmark Stonehenge is not the only one of its kind in the world. According to an art history professor, the dolmens in Turkey's Thracian provinces have a lot of functional similarities with the Stonehenge.
