BBC - A clay tablet discovered during an archaeological dig may be the oldest written record of Homer's epic tale, the Odyssey, ever found in Greece, the country's culture ministry has said.

Found near the ruined Temple of Zeus in the ancient city of Olympia, the tablet has been dated to Roman times.

A consortium led by France’s Total moved a step closer to exploring for oil and gas off Greece, after signing a lease on Tuesday with the government for a block in the Ionian Sea.

European lawmakers on Tuesday approved funding of over 1.5 million euros to assist three Greek islands that suffered widespread damage in a 6.1-Richter earthquake in November 2015.

Scientists and researchers of the University of Athens attempted once more to date the Homeric epics, Iliad and Odyssey, based on the study of natural phenomena which were described by Homer in his poems, in relation to the real, recorded scientific and astronomical phenomena.

A strong earthquake struck the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea with its epicenter 23 km southwest of the main town of Lefkada.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and occurred at 9:10 a.m. (0710 GMT) Tuesday off Greece’s western mainland, some 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of Athens.

The latest international celebrity that has reportedly purchased a Greek isle is movie star Johnny Depp,  according to a spokesman for a London-based real estate firm specializing in “deep-pocketed” property purchases.

A civil war of sorts appears to have broken out among Greek hoteliers as seven Ionian Sea associations of owners of hotels, rooms and food service enterprises have sent a letter of strong protest to the ministers of economy and finance regarding the favorable value-added tax status that their counterparts on the Aegean islands enjoy.
