Governor claims Istanbul is 'among safest cities in the world'

Istanbul remains among the safest cities in the world, despite escalating regional risks and a series of terrorist attacks in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin claimed on Sept. 6.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Istanbul Finance Summit (ISF16), Şahin said Istanbul was as at risk of terrorism as any other major global city. 

Turkey detains ISIL suspects, seizes suicide vest

Turkish security forces have arrested two suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants and seized plastic explosives and a suicide vest, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported March 7. 

The two were apprehended at a border crossing, when authorities noticed that they were trying to place a bag inside the back of a truck that had entered Turkey from Syria.

Number of Suspects Detained Over Istanbul Attack Increases to Seven

The number of suspects detained over the suicide attack in Istanbul on Tuesday has increased to seven.

This was announced by Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala on Thursday, Hurriyet Daily News quotes him as saying.

On Wednesday, Ala stated that one suspect had been detained, while later Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu added that four more people had been arrested.

German tour giant TUI offers free cancelation of Istanbul trips

German tourism giant TUI said that customers who had booked trips to Istanbul can switch destination without penalties, after a suicide attack in the Turkish city on early Jan. 12 claimed 10 lives, nine of them Germans, as reported by Agence France-Presse. 

The operator said customers can also opt to postpone their trip to Istanbul without penalties for the next six days.
