Rail workers hold stoppage on Monday, strike on Tuesday

Greek rail workers will be holding a series of stoppages and a strike, rail operator Trainose announced on Thursday, without giving a reason for the action.

According to the announcement, workers will walk off the job on Monday for three hours starting at 5 a.m., 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., while on Tuesday, they will stage a 24-hours strike.

No metro, ISAP, buses, trolley or tram on Monday

Commuters in the capital are set for another day of frustration on Monday as public transport workers walk off the job in protest at the government's multi-bill of austerity measures and reforms which is to be voted on in Parliament later in the day.

There will be no services on the Athens metro, the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP), trolley buses, city buses or the tram.

Victims of unions

We ought to be outraged by the trouble Tuesday's strike on the Athens metro caused for many thousands of residents of the Greek capital.

Motorists got stuck in traffic for hours and commuters were jostled and squashed as they tried to get into jam-packed buses because the metro unionists decided to call a strike for which there is absolutely no justification.

No metro in Greek capital on Tuesday morning

Workers on the Athens metro will be holding a work stoppage on Tuesday morning, which means there will be no service until after 9 a.m.

The walkout, which is designed to protest plans for the company's privatization, will affect the metro's lines 2 and 3, including service to Athens International Airport. It will not, however, affect line 1 of the ISAP electric railway.

Greek authorities beef up police patrols

Police have announced a tightening of security around the country during the upcoming holiday season.

Among the measures announced were increased patrols at bus, train, tram and metro stations, in shopping areas and malls and outdoor markets.

Train stations, in particular, have been the target of anti-establishment groups in recent months.
