Bulgarian MP Indicted over Hooliganism, Obstruction of Police

The Bulgarian prosecuting authority has filed an indictment against Aleksandar Metodiev, a lawmaker from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).

The development for which he is being put on trial dates back from May. Metodiev agreed in July to have his immunity lifted at the prosecution's request in order to face criminal prosecution.

Bulgaria's Parliament Overrides Presidential Veto on Election Rules

Bulgaria's Parliament rejected on Wednesday the presidential veto on disputed changes to election rules concerning the opening of polling stations abroad.

The veto imposed by President Rosen Plevneliev last week was rejected by 135 members of the 240-seat National Assembly.

Bulgarian PM Slightly Lifts Veil On GERB's Presidential Candidate

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov slightly lifted the veil on his party's candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections which are scheduled to take place in the autumn.

However rather than naming any of the possible candidates, Borisov pointed to those who will not run in the elections.

Bulgaria's Stara Zagora Also Bans Wearing of Face-Covering Veils in Public Places

The municipal council of the Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora banned on Thursday the wearing of accessories concealing the face and hampering recognition in public places.

The proposal was made by councilors from Bulgaria's largest ruling party GERB and one of the parties supporting the coalition government, the Patriotic Front (PF).

Electoral Code: Bulgaria Eases Restrictions on Polling Stations Abroad

Bulgarian lawmakers have backtracked on a blanket ban on opening polling stations outside of Bulgaria's diplomatic missions to other countries.

Under the new rules approved on Thursday afternoon, the restrictions will not be in force for the territory of the EU where there are embassies or consulates.

Bulgaria Parliament ex-Official Faces Renewed Tax Evasion Trial

Former Deputy Parliament Speaker Hristo Biserov is to appear before court again on Thursday to face charges of tax evasion.

He is also to be tried again for undeclared currency deals and undeclared bank accounts held in Switzerland.

Last year the Sofia City Court found him not guilty, but prosecuting authorities appealed.
