Reporters will be the guests of honor at the New Year's Eve party in New York's Times Square on Dec. 31, in what organizers said was a celebration of press freedom after an unusually deadly year for journalists at U.S. news outlets.

Foreign hackers reportedly crashed vital software at the Los Angeles Times and several other US newspapers, triggering delays in production and widespread distribution problems, reported RT. 

The European Federation of Journalists, European Centre for Press & Media Freedom, PEN International and Reporters Without Borders criticised on Wednesday new restrictive laws on online media in Albania.

The laws were proposed by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama as part of his drive against "defamation".

Turkey's Capital Markets Board (SPK) has approved a demand of paid capital increase by Hürriyet Gazetecilik ve Matbaacılık AŞ, the holding company which owns media assets, including the Hürriyet Daily News.

News agencies in Europe have joined forces to fight the growing threat posed by fake news. In a resolution adopted last week in Tirana, these commit to developing effective tools and rules to enable journalists and Internet users to fight misinformation as well as to promote reliable media and educate users to surf in the digital environment.

The news agencies,  including the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), that participated earlier this month at an international media conference in Tirana united around a resolution to fight аgainst fake news.

Tirana, Dec 3 /Agerpres/ - Today, fake news is no longer a phenomenon but a true communication strategy in the hands of a few people or groups which try to use the 'fourth power' for purposes often hostile, said the General Director of the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA), Armela Krasniqi, on Sunday, at the opening of the international conference on the topic of "News Agencies

''Fake news spreads faster and deeper'', said software expert Dr. Preslav Nakov.

''Disinformation, together with demographic knowledge is very dangerous because it can influence people's choices. Especially in social networks there must be a balance between fake news and freedom of speech'', he said.

It featured the picture of a growling dog and covers of certain domestic printed media and the heading "The Hounds Are Unleashed," Beta agency reported.

Gökçe Aytulu has taken the helm as the new editor-in-chief of Hürriyet Daily News, replacing outgoing Murat Yetkin.
