Serbian Unions Mark May Day with Protests

The Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia, the Independence Union and the Association of Unions of Pensioners will stage a protest in Belgrade on May 1, marking International Workers' Day.

Ahead of the protest, they organised a two-day campaign in six towns and cities across the country in order to promote labour rights and call for improvements.

Romanian Civil Servants Strike Over Salaries

Thousands of Romanian civil servants staged a one-day strike on April 30, during which no documents will be issued of payments collected.

Trade union leader Bogdan Hossu said the government had failed to apply a unified wage law to the sector, so that equal work and equal responsibility remained unfairly remunerated.

A Labor Ministry invitation to employer associations for talks regarding the government?s plan to increase the minimum salary to 751 euros per month and the content of planned legislative interventions regarding labor issues was received with reservations on Tuesday.

Minimum salary to rise to 654 euros in October

The first part of a government plan to increase the minimum salary is expected to be implemented in October, taking the level up to 654 euros per month for all private sector workers. The government?s election pledge to raise the minimum monthly salary to 751 euros will not be fulfilled before the second half of 2016.

Bulgarian Car Tyre Maker Vidachim Axes 314 Workers

Over 300 employees of Bulgaria's Vidin-based car tyre maker Vidachim will be unemployed as of Monday.

Vidachim, one of the largest companies in Bulgaria's poorest northwestern region, will issue redundancy notices to 314 of its 446 workers amid a lack of orders, according to reports of private TV station Nova TV.

PM Ponta: Public sector's salaries - a disaster, starting with President, Prime Minister

Prime minister, Victor Ponta on Friday said at the Victoria Palace (government's HQs) that the Government hopes to find a solution to solving the salary issue at the local public administration level, adding that 'the public sector's salary law is a total disaster, starting with the President and the Prime minister, whose salaries are smaller than any company's receptionist.'
