Djokovic named Balkan's best athlete for fourth year running

SOFIA - World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic was chosen as Balkan Athlete of the Year 2014 for the fourth time in a row, in the 42nd edition of the poll conducted by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

The Wimbledon champion received a total of 91 points, 40 more than second-placed US Open winner, Croat Marin Cilic.

Tennis: Irina Begu qualifies for third round of Australian Open

Romanian tennis player Irina Begu qualified, as a first, in the third round of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Wednesday, in Melbourne, after defeating Katerina Siniakova (the Czech Republic), by 7-5, 6-4.

Nadal, Murray cruise at Open as Ivanovic crashes

Big guns Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray successfully blasted their way into the Australian Open second round Jan. 19 but the Grand Slam dream of Ana Ivanovic was shattered.
      
Third seed Nadal and sixth seed Murray both enjoyed straight sets wins, with rising stars Simona Halep and Grigor Dimitrov also progressing comfortably on a cool and windy Melbourne day.
      

Ivanovic holds fifth spot, Jankovic 15th in WTA rankings

LONDON - Serbia's best female tennis player Ana Ivanovic kept hold of the fifth place while Jelena Jankovic is 15th in the new WTA rankings published Sunday, ahead of the start of the Australian Open.

Ivanovic has 4,845 and Jankovic 2590 points, while Bojana Jovanovski is back to 56th position with 910 points.

Tennis: Simona Halep withdraws from Sydney WTA tournament for medical reasons

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, the main favourite of the WTA tournament in Sydney, withdrew in the last moment from the competition due to a gastroenteritis.
