The outgoing Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergrey Stanishev who was elected MEP said he would not seek appointment as the Bulgarian European commissioner, reports Dnevnik.bg.

He, however, announced his ambitions to seek re-election as head of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in 2015, instead. 

On a day when five political parties have displayed yet another symbolic show of solidarity for Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu’s presidential candidacy, infighting within the Republican People’s Party (CHP) continues.

The executive board of the ruling Social Democratic Party, PSD, decided on Monday that Victor Ponta would be the party’s candidate for the presidential elections, and an official announcement is to be made by the end of this month.

Bulgaria’s Parliament voted in favor of terminating Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev’s MP term, which would allow him to enter the European Parliament.

During the EU elections campaign for the elections Stanishev, who is also the leader of the Party of European Socialists, had said his place on the BSP’s election list was mostly symbolic and that he would give up his seat after the elections.

Bulgarian ruling party chief Sergey Stanishev has surprisingly submitted to Parliament a request to be freed of his duties as a lawmaker in order to become MEP.

His move suggests a sharp turn in plans he has maintained over the past months.
