Tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova was named the best athlete of the year in Bulgaria.

 In the challenging 2020 for sports, in which many competitions were postponed or canceled, the choice was difficult.

As exception, the organizers decided to vote only the top five instead of the top ten as usual.  

Bulgaria's best tennis player Grigor Dimitrov climbed one place in the World Tennis Association (ATP) world rankings. Current ranking for Grigor Dimitrov is ATP 47.

The 28-year-old Bulgarian overcame the qualities of the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva Open and tonight will play against Argentine Federico Delbonis in the first round of the main circuit in Switzerland.

Grigor Dimitrov progressed with one place in the world rankings. Dimitrov, who did not take part in tournaments last week, stayed with 1300 points but was already 28th in the ATP rankings.

This week, Grigor participated in the Monte Carlo Masters Series tournament where he has been defending last year's semifinals.

The participants in Sofia prove the high class of the Bulgarian tournament, reported NOVA TV.

ISTANBUL - The all-Serbian duo of Viktor Troicki and Dusan Lajovic on Wednesday lost 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 to the Turkish-Italian pairing of Tuna Altuna and Alessandro Motti in the opening round of the men's doubles event at the ATP tennis tournament in Istanbul.

Bulgaria's top ranked tennis player Grigor Dimitrov will vie for the title of Sofia Open in the afternon after a swift victory against Nikoloz Basilashvili (Georgia).

Dimitrov will face David Goffin of Belgium after a 63-minute game that ended 6:1, 6:3.

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria has made it to the semi-finals of the Garanti Koza Sofia Open tournament after defeating Serbia's Viktor Troicki in just two sets. 

It has taken Dimitrov just over an hour to defeat Troicki 6:4, 6:3.

SYDNEY - Serbian tennis player Viktor Troicki is through to the semi-finals of the Sydney ATP tournament after German Philipp Kohlschreiber retired from their match on Thursday due to injury.

In a bid to reach another final, title defender Troicki will face Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
