Russia developing 'troubling' anti-satellite weapon: White House

Russia is developing a space-based anti-satellite weapon that is "troubling" for the United States but poses no immediate threat to people on Earth, the White House said Thursday.

The announcement came a day after a wave of speculation sparked by U.S. lawmakers making a cryptic warning of an unspecified but serious national security threat to the country.

The US Department of Defense has begun preparing the US Space Force (USSF) for a possible future conflict with Russia and China in space, the Wall Street Journal reported. The decision comes amid Russia and China deploying lasers and missiles that could disable satellites and disrupt civilian communications.

"It all started after the US decision"

The United States has refused to extend the new START program, which expires on February 5, 2021, and concerns the control of nuclear weapons, TASS reminds.
"It has already begun. This is obvious. Everything began after the US pullout from the ABM treaty", the Russian President explained.
Putin said that Russia "creates an umbrella for itself".

NASA: A Potentially Dangerous Asteroid is Approaching the Earth

A potentially dangerous asteroid with a diameter of 440 to 990 meters is approaching Earth, according to NASA's website.

According to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a celestial body with the number 163373 will approach the Earth at a minimum distance of February 15.

Russia deploys first hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles

Russia deployed its first regiment of hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles on Dec. 27, the Defence Ministry said, a move which President Vladimir Putin has boasted puts his country in a class of its own.   

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has informed Putin of the deployment, according to a ministry statement that did not disclose where the missiles were located.
