7,000 police deployed for November 17 celebrations

The centre of Athens will be in complete lock-down for celebrations of the 43rd anniversary of the 1973 November 17 student uprising anniversary. 7,000 police officers have been deployed all around Athens to prevent riots and ensure safety and order during the marches towards the US Embassy, which are scheduled to start as the day progresses.

Fire-scarred historic building set for renovation

A man walks past the fire-scarred building that used to host the historic Attikon and Apollon cinemas on Stadiou Street, downtown Athens, on Saturday. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation recently announced plans to subsidize the restoration of the building that was damaged by firebombs thrown by protesters during a violent riot in 2012. The interiors of the two theaters survived mostly unscathed.

Victims of 2010 arson attack remembered

People lay flowers Thursday at the site of an arson attack in central Athens that left three bank employees, including one pregnant woman, dead six years ago. The fire broke out after arsonists attacked the brunch of Marfin Bank on Stadiou Avenue during an anti-austerity rally on May 5 in 2010. No one has been convicted of causing the fire.

Greece is gripped by 24-hour strike action on Thursday called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Greek Workers Association (ADEDY) in reaction to the Greek budget reforms and the demolition of Greek workers rights.

ASTOR cinema opens its doors once more

One of the oldest and most respected cinemas in Athens has opened its doors once more. “Astor”, opened in 1947, right after the Nazi occupation and was running until 2005. Now Stadiou Street will once more have its flagship cinema. The location used to host Athens’ possibly earliest cinema screen since 1908, called “Pallas”.

 

 

Traffic disruptions for Independence Day parades

Traffic will be disrupted in downtown Athens on Tuesday and Wednesday to make way for celebrations marking the March 25, 1821 anniversary of Greek independence from Turkish rule.

Students all over the country will be holding their parades on Tuesday, followed by a parade of the armed forces on Wednesday at Syntagma Square.
