The collapse of a building floor in Piraeus on Tuesday where work was being carried out has highlighted the plight of hundreds of thousands of aging buildings in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki and other urban centers without a plan for the future. One of the main parameters of the problem is linked to public education and the legality of carrying out work, particularly in apartment blocks.

A mezzanine floor overlooking the main lobby of the Indonesia Stock Exchange building collapsed on Jan. 15, injuring at least a dozen people under a shower of glass and other debris, an exchange employee and witnesses said.

An elevator plunged three storeys down a tax office in Volos, in central Greece, sending three people to hospital, according to reports Monday.

Reports said seven people were on board when the accident took place.

The reason for the accident is unclear.
