Violence in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian protester and wounded about 200 on July 24 in confrontations with several thousand people demonstrating in the occupied West Bank against a 17-day-old Israeli offensive in Gaza, Palestinian medical officials said.
   

As no soldiers or uniformed police officers are seen in the streets of Gaza city, the Palestinians are waging their main fights against Israel through underground tunnels.

 Thirteen Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting inside the Gaza Strip early Sunday as troops pressed a ground offensive to destroy militant tunnels, an army spokeswoman said.        

"Thirteen soldiers from the Golani Brigade were killed in Gaza overnight," she told AFP, without giving further details.        

The Gaza death toll hit 341 on Saturday as Israeli warplanes intensified their bombardment and troops pressed a ground assault on the 12th day of a major confrontation with Hamas.

The latest incident saw two men, aged 25 and 31, killed in an air strike near Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Two Palestinians were killed in fresh Israeli air strikes in Gaza on Saturday morning, among them a six-year-old child, medics said.

The new deaths raised the toll on the 12th day of violence in Gaza to 337 Palestinians, according to emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra.

Four children on the beach in Gaza City were killed in an Israeli raid on Wednesday, raising the overall death toll to 213, the emergency services said.        

All four were on the beach when the attack took place, in what initially appeared to be shelling from the sea, according to AFP correspondents who witnessed the attack from a nearby hotel.        

With violence in the Gaza Strip escalating by the day, Romania on Monday evacuated 84 nationals from the area as Israeli special forces targeted the Gaza Strip's Hamas-led authorities and its rockets launches.

Israel accepted an Egyptian proposal to hold fire on July 15 after a week-long campaign in Gaza, but warned Hamas it would hit back even harder if the rocket fire does not stop.
      
In an early-morning vote, Israel's security cabinet said it would accept an Egyptian ceasefire which went into force at 0600 GMT, despite Hamas rejecting the initiative.
