The capital's overburdened landfill at Fyli, northwestern Attica, has been expanded yet again following a decision by the local government body responsible for waste management (EDSNA). 

The extension, which covers some 12 hectares, is expected to enable the landfill to cope with the capital's garbage production for another eight to nine months.

Municipal authorities across Greece have until the end of the year to come up with a plan to halve the amount of solid waste that ends up at landfills, Alternate Environment Minister Sokratis Famellos told an event in Thessaloniki over the weekend.

As the cleanup of tons of trash from the streets of Athens gathered pace Thursday, Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou pledged to create six new waste management sites, but provided no details about the timing of the projects nor their planned locations.

Bourgas City Council adopted a project proposal for "Design and construction of anaerobic installations for separately collected biodegradable waste".
