China raises speed of bullet train

China increased yesterday the maximum speed of bullet trains on the Beijing-Shanghai line to 350 kilometers per hour, six years after a fatal accident led to a speed cap.

The speed limit had been reduced to 300 kilometers per hour after 40 people died in a high-speed train crash near Wenzhou in July 2011.

Chinese lawyer arrested for spying after protesting removal of Christian crosses

Chinese human rights lawyer Zhang Kai disappeared in police custody after joining the fight against a government drive to take down church crosses. The Beijing-based attorney wcould face spying charges after his arrest on August 25 at Wenzhou, known as China’s Jerusalem because of its large Christian population.

Historic Chinese church gutted by fire: Xinhua

A fire largely destroyed one of China's oldest churches early Monday, state media reported, gutting the inside of the late 19th century structure.
      
"The inside of the building is totally destroyed," a firefighter told the official Xinhua news agency after the blaze at the gothic-style Jiangbei Cathedral in Ningbo, in Zhejiang province.
