A meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was underway in Ankara on Monday, in a one-day visit aimed at maintaining the positive momentum achieved in bilateral ties in recent months.

Greece is gearing up for the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Türkiye on May 13, with hopes high in Athens for a "period of calmness" in often tense relations between the neighbors.

"I think what we should expect is a frank meeting," Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis told radio Skai on May 9.

Political leaders continue touring the country ahead of the upcoming European elections on June 9, despite an expected slowdown this week due to the Easter holidays.

Two opinion polls released over the weekend suggest that the ruling New Democracy party is on track to achieve the 33% support target set by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said on Wednesday that the case of Fredi Beleri, a mayor from Albania's Greek minority who was recently sentenced to two years in prison for buying votes, should be viewed as a European concern rather than a bilateral issue between the two Balkan neighbors.
