Tiger cub found in garbage put down, zoo announces

Hasija, the four-month-old white tiger cub found under a garbage bin outside Attica Zoological Park in late February, has been put down, the zoo has said.

In a post on Facebook, the zoo said that it had done everything possible to save the animal, the tiger's "serious incurable and painful genetic problems were incompatible with a basic quality of life and well-being."

Veterinarians are fighting to save a white tiger cub abandoned in a rubbish bin at an Athens zoo, believed to be a victim of the illegal wildlife trade.

The three-month old white tiger was found on February 28 under a garbage bin in the parking lot of the Attica Zoological Park by a cleaner, who notified the zoo owner.

Working as a veterinarian at a zoo in Istanbul's Tuzla district, Yücel Yılmaz adopted an endangered white lion when its mother rejected it after birth.

Yılmaz took care of the lion, whose mother did not nurse it, for 45 days with his wife and children.

The İzmir Natural Life Park has announced the arrival of a new baby animal whose species is at risk in its respective natural habitat: A healthy Asian elephant.

Begümcan, a 25-year-old elephant, gave birth to a female calf in the zoo's protected facility and delighted zookeepers, zoo officials told reporters.

No name has been given to the baby elephant yet.
