Health unit sent in western port towns as coronavirus cases soar in Italy
As Italy confirmed the six death and at least 200 cases in the country's coronavirus outbreak, Greece's National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced Monday it has sent a unit to the western port town of Patras to inform crews of passenger and merchant ships arriving from Italy on measures to protect from the virus.
Court postpones retrial in US tourist's beating death
A Greek court on Wednesday postponed the retrial of seven suspects on murder charges over the 2017 fatal beating of a Texan tourist on an island resort to allow a lawyer newly hired by the victim's family to familiarize himself with the case.
The court in the western port town of Patras postponed the case until Jan. 13.
ND leader asks for clear mandate in July elections
Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for a strong mandate in the upcoming national elections on July 7, saying Greece needs a "stable government."
"I need and ask for a strong mandate on July 7," he told attendees at a campaign rally in the western city of Patras on Tuesday evening. "There is no room for lost votes or experiments."

Freighter smashes into Patras dock, no injuries
A freighter carrying wheeled cargo crashed on Monday afternoon into the dock of the port city of Patras in the northern Peloponnese while it was trying to dock, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.
The Italian-flagged ro-ro vessel "Eurocargo Livorno" had left Bari with eight passengers and a cargo of 283 trucks, the report said.

EWG green-lights tranche disbursement for Greece
The EuroWorking Group (EWG) meeting on Wednesday concluded that Greece has completed the implementation of the reforms agreed with its creditors and will recommend the disbursement of an outstanding 1-billion-euro tranche to the country at the Eurogroup scheduled for Friday, according to eurozone sources.

Moderate tremor strikes south of Patras
An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, struck the area southeast of the city of Patras in the northern Peloponnese on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Athens Observatory's Geodynamic Institute, the quake's epicenter was located some 26 kilometers southeast of the city.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Sunday, the last day before Lent, according to the Christian Orthodox calendar, saw the culmination of Carnival celebrations across Greece.
Helped by the sunny weather, many thousands took part in the processions and other celebrations of Carnival.

Body of missing pilot found
The body of the 47-year-old pilot whose single-engine, two-seat plane went down over the Patraikos Gulf in western Greece Wednesday has been retrieved.
The body was found Saturday afternoon by Coast Guard divers inside the plane. It will eventually be taken to the city of Patras for an autopsy

A Greek court on Thursday convicted and sentenced six of nine suspects in the fatal beating of an American tourist in an island resort last year.
They were handed sentences ranging from five to 15 years on reduced charges of deliberate bodily harm.
