ND leader visits Canadair base, thanks firefighters

President visits fire-stricken town in east Attica
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos visited the fire-stricken east coast of Attica on Wednesday to inspect the damage caused by last week's deadly blaze and efforts to help those affected.
At least 91 people were killed and scores were injured in Mati, a holiday spot 17 miles east of Athens, when flames fanned by gale-force winds burned down the town.

Italy, Romania sending more aircraft, minister says
Greece's public order minister has said Italy is dispatching two Canadair firefighting planes and Romania is sending a third aircraft to help combat wildfires near the Greek capital that have claimed the lives of at least 74 people.
Croatia offers Canadair aircraft to Greece
Croatia has offered two Canadair aircraft to help Greece battle wildfires that have killed dozens of people near Athens.
Defense Minister Damir Krsticevic said Tuesday Croatia is preparing the planes so they are ready to go to Greece if needed there.
At least 60 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in the wildfires.

Italy offers water-dropping aircraft to Greece
Italy is offering two Canadair aircraft to help Greece battle wildfires that have killed dozens of people near Athens.
Premier Giuseppe Conte on Tuesday tweeted Italy's support for Greece and condolences for those who have died. He announced Italy was making the two water-dropping aircraft available.

Large fire breaks out on Aegean island of Skopelos
Dozens of firemen, municipal workers and volunteers, along with four water-dumping airplanes, were attempting on Sunday afternoon to control a large fire that broke out on a remote hillside on the Aegean island of Skopelos and was fast eating through a valuable pine forest on at least three different fronts.

Fire burns on Zakynthos for third day
Authorities in Greece say a wildfire that broke out on the holiday island of Zakynthos on Saturday continues to burn unchecked.
The fire destroyed one home near the villages of Maries, in the eastern part of the island also known as Zante, while residents of nearby homes were on standby to evacuate, authorities said.

A fire occurred shortly before 4pm in a pine forest in Kalamos, Attica, towards the Holy Apostles area. As it has been known by the Fire Brigade, the fire, which is quite large, spread quickly, while there are scattered houses in the area.
The exact number of damaged houses has not been known, but the information speaks for 15-20, of which five have more serious damage.
