Putin, Obama Hold Constructive, Frank Talks on Syria, Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama held constructive and frank talks during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on Monday.

This constituted their first face-to-face meeting in nearly a year, the two presidents having last met at the APEC summit in China in November 2014.

Turkey's Syrian policy appears stationary

There is a flurry of new activity on Syria but none of it has Bashar al-Assad?s departure as the principle aim. The effort is increasingly focused on fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The fear is that if Assad falls hastily and in a disorderly manner, the way Saddam did, Damascus will be overtaken by chaos and overrun by ISIL and other al-Qaeda related groups. 

Iran's leader says Syria's president must remain in power

Iran's president said Sept. 27 that Syrian leader Bashar Assad must remain in power to fight extremist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and must not be weakened, putting him at odds with the United States and key nations who insist Assad must go in order to achieve peace.
