Introduction of Fingerprint Identification in Outpatient Sector Postponed

Bulgaria's Health Ministry has postponed the introduction of fingerprint identification in the outpatient sector.

The decision will protect the healthcare system from collapse in terms of medical, technical, information and financial stability, stated Health Minister Ilko Semerdzhiev.

Two-Thirds of Deaths in Bulgaria Linked to Cardiovascular Diseases

Two in every three Bulgarians die from cardiovascular diseases, national statistics show.

The data, published on the occasion of the World Heart Day, reveals that more than 70 000, out of 100 000 death cases on an annual basis, were caused by myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, brain stroke, or heart failure.

Bulgarian Children's Fund Bosses Face Corruption Charges

Bulgaria's special prosecution is investigating five officials from the Fund for Treatment of Children Abroad, including its former head, Pavel Aleksandrov, for corruption, it said on Thursday.

The  administrators of the fund, who have been charged with participating in an organized criminal group, corruption and official misconduct, were all released on bail. 

Bulgaria's Health Ministry Mulls 3-10% Tax on Junk Food

Bulgaria's Health Ministry plans to introduce a new tax of 3-10% on unhealthy food products and energy drinks.

"The tax rate will be determined by the health risk, be it caused by salt, sugar, trans-fatty acids, or the amount of caffeine or taurin in drinks," said Adam Persenski, Deputy Health Minister, as cited by Trud daily.
