The final version of Turkey's national school curriculum has left evolution out and added the concept of "jihad" as part of Islamic law in books, Education Minister İsmet Yılmaz said on July 18.

More than 7,000 people were dismissed with a new state of emergency decree published in the Official Gazette on July 14.

A total of 7,395 dismissals were carried out and 312 public workers were reinstated to their posts with the decree.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ has asked two jailed educators Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça to end their long-running hunger strikes, carried out in protest at their dismissal through state of emergency decrees.  

The Union of Education and Science Workers (Eğitim-İş) will resort to court to protest the Education Ministry's recent regulation omitting Darwin's theory of evolution from Turkey's high school curriculum, its chair Mehmet Balık has told Deutsche Welle.

Police bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the headquarters of the Education Ministry on Monday after officials reported finding a suspicious package on the premises.

Experts checked the parcel and determined that it contained no suspicious device or other contents that could be a cause for concern.

A suspicious package sent to the Education Ministry proved to be a false alarm. A bomb disposal unit has been dispatched to the scene. The package arrived at 2pm via courier and the employees called police as they considered it suspicious.

The brother of a member of an investigation commission looking into state of emergency decrees has been dismissed from his duty over his alleged connection with the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) as part of a decree.

The principal of a Central Anatolian high school who has become the subject of an investigation after he announced that some classes would be gender-segregated starting in the 2017-2018 school year has defended his proposal as no more than "relocating the furniture in a room."
