General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean

The amount of fish caught in 2021 has decreased across the country, while water pollution and overfishing have reduced the fish stock in the Black Sea, according to an expert.

Stressing especially on overfishing, Ahmet Şahin from Sürmene Marine Sciences Faculty of Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ), warned, "The amount of fish caught in the Black Sea decreased visibly."

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to Marseilles on Friday for a mini summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on biodiversity in the Mediterranean, a gathering also attended by ECB Managing Director Christine Lagarde and Hollywood star Harrison Ford, in his capacity as the vice-president of the group Conservation International.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will take part in the inaugural meeting of the High Level Conference of the International Union for Conservation of Nature World Conservation held in Marseille, at the formal invitation of the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.

Turkey is one of six countries leading the fishing sector in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean out of the 24 member countries of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), according to a two-year report released on Dec. 14.

Next year, Bulgaria and Romania will be allowed to fish for turbot, totaling 150 tonnes (75 tonnes per country), which is 32 percent more than the amount allowed so far. This was announced by the press center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Next year Bulgarian and Romanian fishermen in the Black Sea will be able to continue fishing at the same levels as in 2018.

The Council today adopted a regulation setting the 2019 catch limits for the commercially most important fish stocks in the Black Sea. The regulation affects Bulgaria and Romania.
