Indian police detain hundreds after Hindu-Muslim clashes in New Delhi

Indian police said on Feb. 28 they had detained hundreds of people and were keeping a heavy presence in northeast New Delhi, days after the worst bout of sectarian violence in the capital in decades.

At least 38 people were killed in Hindu-Muslim violence this week, police said, amid mounting international criticism that authorities failed to protect minority Muslims.

Gunmen storm government compound in Kashmir

Indian police say security forces are battling a group of gunmen inside a government compound in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.
Police told the Associated Press news agency on Monday that army and paramilitary soldiers cordoned off the compound after gunshots were heard near Pampore town, about 10km outside of Srinagar, capital of Indian Kashmir.

UN climate chief to miss session after sex harassment case

The United Nations' top climate change official will not chair a key meeting in Kenya next week as Indian police investigate a sexual harassment complaint against him, officials said Feb. 22.
      
Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Nobel-Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), pulled out due to "issues demanding his attention", the UN body said.
