Minister to press on with plans to merge universities despite objections
Education Minister Costas Gavroglou is pressing on with plans to merge technical colleges (TEIs) with universities despite protests by both teachers and students.
The move is seen as part of plans by the government to gain popularity in the runup to elections - which are scheduled for October but expected earlier - by appointing new academic staff to the expanded institutions.
Universities undermined
Tertiary education in this country has suffered a succession of blows from the leftist-led administration.
The latest casualty of government policy is the International Hellenic University (IHU) in Thessaloniki. Instead of taking steps to upgrade the institution, the Education Ministry went in the opposite direction.

IHU president steps down
The president of the International Hellenic University (IHU) in Thessaloniki, Costas Grammenos, has resigned following an announcement by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last week of plans to "partner" the institution with three technical colleges in northern Greece.

The study, which was carried out by a group of Greek experts from local as well as international institutions and unveiled during a recent seminar in Berlin, was conducted before Israel's latest Gaza offensive.
