Classes cancelled after deadly storm sweeps several provinces

Classes have been cancelled in at least 10 provinces, including Istanbul, after a powerful storm has killed five people, left dozens of others injured, sank boats and damaged buildings across the country.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said at least four people were killed and more than 40 were injured in Istanbul, one of the cities hit hard by the storm.

Man who attacked İYİ Party executive arrested

A man who attacked the Istanbul provincial head of the opposition İYİ (Good) Party has been arrested, the Istanbul Governor's Office has said in a statement.

The assailant punched Buğra Kavuncu on Aug. 20 on the street in Istanbul's Bakırköy district as Kavuncu left a TV broadcaster's building after attending a show.

More than 38,250 irregular migrants held in Istanbul since start of 2021

More than 38,250 irregular migrants held in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul as of Jan. 1 have been handed to the local migration office, authorities said on Aug. 17.

The Istanbul Governor's Office said in a statement that 453 irregular migrants, including 159 Afghans, were held in Istanbul on Monday.

Boğaziçi rector says he will not resign

Melih Bulu, the newly appointed rector at Istanbul's Boğaziçi University, said he will not step down following protests by the university students and academics.

Speaking to reporters, Bulu said he has no intentions to resign from his post and that he assumes that the crisis that started with his appointment will end in six months and that it will be so.

Rain, snow disrupts life across country

Heavy rains and snow have battered Turkey's east, the Mediterranean and west coasts, disrupting daily life, particularly in Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has warned the residents of Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts, eastern provinces, Istanbul and the capital Ankara for rainy weather conditions.

Helicopter’s tail hits lighting pole in Istanbul

A gendarme helicopter's tail hit a lighting pole when it was trying to get into a parking position at an Istanbul airport on Dec. 31. 

The accident took place at the Sabiha Gökçen Airport and police, fire brigades, and health professionals were dispatched to the scene following the accident.

There was no disruption in airport traffic due to the accident.

The Istanbul Governor's Office has launched an inquiry into a portrait of Ottoman Emperor Mehmet the Conqueror, which the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality had bought in an auction in London for $1.1 million, after allegations that the painting could be fake.
