Police clashed with protesters in central Athens on Friday night during a rally over the death of George Floyd, who suffocated on May 25 as a Minneapolis police officer jammed a knee into his neck as he was held down on the street.

Police in central Athens have closed several central metro stations after hundreds of people gathered on Syntagma Square in solidarity with demonstrators in the United States protesting the death of a black man in police custody last month.

The tenor of the protests set off by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police has taken a turn from the explosive anger that has fueled the setting of fires, breaking of windows and other violence to a quiet, yet more forceful, grassroots call for more to be done to address racial injustice.

Holding banners decrying racism and police brutality, demonstrators marched through Thessaloniki on Tuesday to show solidarity with protesters in the US over the death of George Floyd while in police custody. Many held banners reading "Black lives matter" and "I can't breathe," the phrase that Floyd uttered repeatedly while pinned to the street under a police officer's knee.
