Protests shift to memorializing Floyd amid push for change

The tenor of the protests set off by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police has taken a turn from the explosive anger that has fueled the setting of fires, breaking of windows and other violence to a quiet, yet more forceful, grassroots call for more to be done to address racial injustice.

Ankara hails anti-racist protests in US

Turkey's ruling party spokesman on June 3 hailed demands for equality as anti-racist protests continue in the country after the killing of African-American man George Floyd. 

Turkey is against all groups trying to turn legitimate protests in the US violent and bring public order under their destructive influence, said Ömer Çelik, spokesman for the AKP, after a party board meeting. 

Five arrested in George Floyd protest march in Athens

Five people were arrested and 12 detained in clashes between protesters and police during a march in central Athens over the death of George Floyd, the handcuffed black man who died after being restrained by Minneapolis police on May 25.

The march, organised by leftist groups, started from Syntagma square and reached the US embassy on Wednesday night.

Thessaloniki rally in protest at George Floyd’s death

Holding banners decrying racism and police brutality, demonstrators marched through Thessaloniki on Tuesday to show solidarity with protesters in the US over the death of George Floyd while in police custody. Many held banners reading "Black lives matter" and "I can't breathe," the phrase that Floyd uttered repeatedly while pinned to the street under a police officer's knee.
