EU spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said on Monday that the EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn is hoping to meet the leaders of four main political parties very soon to discuss the recent escalation of the crisis which has seen daily protests on the streets of Skopje.

After a day of tense political talks, Macedonia's parliament voted on Tuesday night to postpone elections originally planned for April 24. The vote followed a joint EU-US assessment saying the country is not yet ready to hold a free and fair general election.

Biden on Monday stepped up pressure on embattled Macedonian premier Gruevski to implement the agreement brokered by the EU and the US last summer.

Gruevski's surprise visit to Washington came as talks on the implementation of the agreement had practically come to a halt.

The three MEPs - Ivo Vajgl, Eduard Kukan and Richard Howitt - are to arrive on Monday and have separate meetings with representatives of the four main political parties in Macedonia, aimed at ensuring that the crisis deal struck last summer is properly implemented.

The forthcoming European Commission report on Montenegro is likely to positively assess progress in the country but will stress the need for a more efficient fight against corruption and the need for guarantees of media freedom, sources in Brussels said.

Hours-long talks in Strasbourg between Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and opposition Socal Democrat leader Zoran Zaev ended at 3.30am Wednesday without resolution to Macedonia's political crisis.

The three MEPs that facilitated the dialogue said they heard frank discussions from both leaders and extracted a commitment to meet again, however.
